With our third game in five days, we can now be counted as actual fans of the Portland Timbers. Last night’s game was a friendly between the Timbers and Bayern München II. This Bayern side is the reserve club for the Bundelisga side and plays in the German third division with most of their players aged between 18 and 23.
For those who don’t know, we hate Bayern Munich. With Morgen’s family coming from Franconia, we are of course supporters of FC Nürnberg (Wir sind der Club!). So we had more than one reason to be pulling for our hometown Timbers. But despite our sworn enemies playing at PGE Park, it was still nice to see the German kits worn around the stadium and even the German flag flying high above the pitch.

Über alles in der Welt.

Tough to argue with Bayern's kit, even for the reserve squad.

It was downright hot out, especially for Portland.
In the end, the Bayern youngsters just weren’t good enough to beat our Timbers. Portland muscled their way to two goals and had a series of nice saves to keep the Germans off the scoreboard. They did come very close late in the match though with a free kick that ricocheted off of the post before being claimed by Portland’s keeper.

Timber Joey makes his cut for the Timbers' second goal.

The Timbers appear way cooler than most soccer teams. I might have to become a long distance fan….
