Hot Day Leads to Cool Moon

With another warm afternoon in PDX, Mao and I headed to Jamison Sqare to read in the shade. I have an ulterior motive of visiting Cool Moon, an ice cream shop at the corner of NW 11th and Johnson in the Pearl. Jamison Park is home to stroller pushing moms and shrieking children splashing through fountains. Cool Moon quite brilliantly established their shop across the street from this mecca for those under the age of ten.

After half an hour of reading/people watching, we ventured over to Cool Moon. The store was full of kids, but the menu definitely targeted those with more cultured palates. The list of flavors was impressive and changes based on what ingredients are available seasonally. Spicy Thai Chili, Saffron Sunshine, Marcona Almond, and Chocolate Zinfandel are just some of what is offered at various times during the year. I sampled Kulfi, a combination of pistachio, cardamom and rosewater, before settling on Bing Cherry Almond Chip. Mao was a little more traditional, choosing his usual mint chocolate chip. All in all, the ice cream was delicious and interesting. Supporting a local place using local ingredients made it taste all the better. Cool Moon may not replace our beloved neighborhood Bleuet, but it’s someplace we’ll frequent during the warmer months in the city.
