With six matches left in the 2009 season, the Portland Timbers have already clinched a USL-1 playoff spot. A six-point lead in the standings and a match-up with second place Charleston tomorrow night means Portland can all but guarantee a top finish in the league just a year after finishing dead last.
Four of the final six Timbers matches will be here in Portland and we’ll be heading to each one. Once the playoffs begin, Portland will have home-and-home match-ups similar in style to European tournaments. The aggregate score of the two matches will determine the winner of each round with ties being decided by away goals (if applicable). So there is a chance of three more home games as long as the Timbers keep winning once the playoffs begin on September 25.
